Chalk Pastels are an exciting medium to explore whether you are a beginner or a seasoned artist.  Their blendability, rich pigments, tactile nature, and no drying time make them a fantastic tool for artistic expression and skill development.  Plus, there is something freeing in being messy.

A Brief History of Chalk Pastels

The origins of chalk pastels trace back to the Renaissance when artists sought a way to create rich and blendable drawings.  Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo were known to experiment with this medium but it wasnt until the 18th century when chalk pastels gained poularity.

During the Impressionist period, Edgar Degas revolutionized pastels by using them to create expressive and dynamic ballerina sketches. Amongst other artists who have been known to use pastels were Mary Cassat and Odilon Redon who used the medium to create atmospheric compositions.

Tips for Working with Chalk Pastels

• Use the right paper – Textured surfaces work best because they help hold the pigment in place.
• Experiment with blending – While fingers are a classic blending tool, blending stumps, brushes and tissue paper can create intereseting effects.
• Layer thoughtfully – Start with light applications and build up to avoid overloading the paper.
• Fixative is your friend –Pastel artwork is fragile so use a fixative to preserve it and prevent smudging.
• Embrace the mess – Be prepared for a bit of dust and mess and use a damp cloth nearby.
